Overview: Namima Yuuzou, Lieutenant of the Thirteenth Division, is a man whose unconventional genius and ability to understand others is as praised as he himself is reviled. He was born in the Rukongai a little over one hundred and thirty years ago in a village on the outskirts of western districts. They named themselves Namima for the land they lived in, and he was named Yuuzou--the third son of the couple and the only one to live to adulthood. As his parents discovered, this was not because of sheer luck. Yuuzou's spiritual power was abnormally high for a plus soul, and as a result he was prized by the tribal villagers that raised him. Unfortunately, the distance between the village and the rest of civilization was exaggerated by the ocean that separated them from many of the other coastal districts. Without any true knowledge of the shinigami or of any other soul with large spiritual power, Yuuzou's reiatsu ran rampant and he had no way to suppress himself. This eventually attracted one of the few lucky hollow that occasionally made it through the dangai to the tribal village, and with no shinigami in reach to help, it wreaked havoc.

The day the hollow attacked changed Yuuzou in every possible way. His family died, his friends died, and the people he had grown up with all died. In a display of both bravery and stupidity, Yuuzou threw himself at the hollow and thrust everything he had into its jaws. The force of his soul killed the demon, but the damage he took was crippling. Its teeth left deep gashes in his torso and nearly removed his left arm. Over the course of the next few weeks, Yuuzou took one of the remaining rafts of his people to the mainland. Improper treatment of his wounds led them to fester and rot, and at its peak Yuuzou contracted a spiritual version of leprosy. He arrived on shore a brutalized man months after going afloat. With only raw fish to eat and salt water to drink, the tragic experience he had endured forever ruined his mind. The kind and loving Yuuzou was drowned by the waves; only a perverted and deformed shadow lived to see civilization.

In the Shin'o Academy, Yuuzou was hated. Though treated by the Fourth Division for his various diseases, and given the spiritual gauze that has since become famous, no one could stand to be around him. His tongue was sharp, his actions cruel, and even his smell was enough to put others off. At one point he was a candidate for the Maggot's Nest--that was, until the Thirteenth Division Captain, Chirirenge Hareryou, took the Leper under his wing. In Yuuzou, the captain saw the potential for a psychological weapon unseen in the Seireitei since for a hundred years. Immediately after graduation, Hareryou took in the Leper, put him in as the third seat of the division, and began to hone the talents hatred and madness had given him. Within just a few scant years the previous lieutenant of the division went missing--something that both Hareryou and Yuuzou both deny having any part in. Regardless of the mysterious circumstances around the man's death, it gave Yuuzou the position he needed to become the Thirteenth Division Lieutenant.

Appearance: The deformities Yuuzou suffered had long since hardened by time he reached the Seireitei. He hides himself under more than a dozen layers of bandage that cover everything from his hair to his hands. Only a single eye--the only one that still works--looks upon the world. It is filled with contempt for the world, contempt that is refueled whenever someone uses his name as a curse or makes mention of his destroyed body. Yellow in color, it is covered in a disgusting film, the blood vessels broken and the iris blurry. This makes it impossible for anyone to guess when Yuuzou feels any true positive emotion. The eyes are a window to the soul, and the Leper's is black and hateful. Yuuzou's other is hidden because it no longer works. It is covered in dry ulcers and a bloody lid, leaving it better hidden by the gauze.

Should someone ever peel back the bandages from his head and face, they would see the ugliest man in all the Seireitei. His skin, once browned by the sun, is now a pale sickly yellow. Black veins are visible just underneath that often bleed freely. His nose has all but rotted away, leaving a mess of flesh and black cartilage along with two holes to wheeze through. It is hard for Yuuzou to breathe this way, and so he can often heard breathing through his mouth instead. This has left his lips chapped, black, and constantly bleeding. A thick tongue missing a chunk on the left side goes over them again and again in vain attempts to moisturize. This is a mouth that never smiles innocently. Yuuzou only laughs when he sees someone in pain or when he is inflicting pain on another, and when he does he reveals the broken yellow teeth that are jagged like shattered knives. Any hair he once had has long since fallen out, leaving his scalp covered in bleeding sores and liver spots. In order to keep facial hair from growing in he has removed the follicles from his lips, chin, and cheeks medically.

Even with a diseased body, Yuuzou's spiritual power has locked in large amounts of strength in his wiry frame. He does not eat much, and as a result has a thin build. Standing at only five feet and two inches in height, many would consider him malnourished. His muscles and bones are gaunt and visible when naked. Along with them are the dozens of scars his leprosy has left. Large swathes of light tissue cover his ribs, back, and chest. Infected sores and bruises have hardened up and left puckering spots of scaled skin along his arms and legs. The Fourth Division has only been able to treat these infections as they crop up, and the spiritual nature of Yuuzou's infection has made it impossible to cleanse his flesh of the disease. Thus he routinely has new scars, spots, and sores appearing haphazardly all over his body. The Leper pays little heed to these constant minor infections and wounds. To him they are reminders of his ugliness, and he has been reminded of that more than enough times to care.

Yuuzou's limbs suffered tremendous amounts of damage during his journey to the Seireitei. His left hand is completely unusable, as the fingers have been destroyed from infections, the wrist stiffened with Carpal tunnel and cysts, and the palm covered in a constantly tearing layer of thin skin. If it were not for the constant treatment from the Fourth and Twelfth Divisions to his right hand, he would be unable to wield a sword in combat. It has been restored time and time again, though the spiritual leprosy prays on Yuuzou's nerves without respite. Eventually, he knows, his right hand will fall just as his left has. Luckily he will be able to save that arm. As his left was nearly torn off by the hollow that ruined him all those years ago, it has barely any remaining motor function. Yuuzou can not lift it above his chest, nor can he bend it properly or produce much strength through the limb. For all intents and purposes, it is dead weight.

Much like Yuuzou's arms and hands, his legs have also been broken. He is bowlegged, the result of a terrible fall shattering both kneecaps while he was training in the Shinto Academy. A pair of special mechanical devices fixed on his legs allows them to retain their movement, though they are not as strong as they once were. Running and walking in short bursts is often fine, but standing for long lengths of time often leaves Yuuzou in tremendous amounts of pain. As a result he can often be found sitting or bathing, hoping to soothe his rapidly decaying legs.

With the exception of his gauze, Yuuzou's uniform fits that of the typical shinigami's own. The left sleeve is long enough to cover what remains of the hand, which is the only alteration he had ordered. Sitting on his left bicep is the badge of his station, the flower marking him as the Thirteenth Division's lieutenant. If it were not for code, he would not wear it. He takes no pride in his station, his race, or anything else dealing with the shinigami.

Personality: Yuuzou's mental scape is incredibly complex and, to most, haunting. Many psychologist, including the Fourth Division's Lieutenant, have tried again and again to break down and analyze his mind. They have found, much to their dismay, that there is not a single piece of the black puzzle that does not weigh as heavily as any other. At the very base, many experts believe that he suffers from an extremely powerful form of psychopathy that has eliminated major emotions, such as empathy and regret. This is considered an incredibly dangerous lack of traits with severe implications. After observing some of his behaviours, such as animal cruelty, attempted rape, and discovering plans of murder, the Onmitsukidou decided to throw him into the Maggot's Nest. Chirirenge Hareryou's actions to prevent this are still considered controversial with most of the Onmitsukido, psychologists involved with the case, and academy professors who still believe that someone without the ability to empathize should not be allowed integration with the public.

But even the most heinous predictions of what Yuuzou is capable of did not even skim the surface of what the Leper truly is. Despite his lack of empathy, Yuuzou is extremely manipulative. When first met, he comes off as a brooding man whom is scarred and unwilling to deal with others socially. Instead, he is observing everything others do. Yuuzou studies facial movements, body language, vocal tone, eye movement, manner of speech, and a host of other things to understand a person's personality and how they react. The amount of information he is capable of reaping is massive, and despite his problems, no one can deny his talent and ability when it comes to deconstructing another's personality. Once he has this information, able to be gleaned within just a few minutes of the initial meeting, Yuuzou begins to plan his attack. His desire is to break people into twisted mirrors of himself. There has never been a person he has not figured out how to cut down verbally beyond his captain and the commander, though he also understands that it does occasionally take more than a verbal lash to truly break someone. And even more so, he knows that some people are better targets then others.

Women and children are two of Yuuzou's favorite prey, especially the latter. He sees children, no matter their upbringing, as ignorant things that are disgusting in every sense. This deep hatred for the young, stemming from Yuuzou's time in the Rukongai when he was attacked and mocked and questioned, eventually grew like a tumor until it became something worse. While attacking the ignorant verbally was effective, children and young adults could be counciled and helped with the problems the break would cause. As a result, he decided on a method that could not be easily remedied--pedophillia. Known only to the captain and a few elite members of the Dohougakai, Yuuzou has another child brought in from the Rukongai every week to be raped and tortured. They are never killed and their memories are always altered so that they can never pin the blame back on the Thirteenth Division's lieutenant. Occasionally women are brought in as well, receiving the same treatment as children of both genders. If ever found out, the consequences would invariably lead to either execution or imprisonment until Yuuzou died. Because of this he has used his ability to manipulate others to create a network of informants and spies to monitor the activities and schedules of Onmitsukido operatives and other shinigami involved in law enforcement.

For all of Yuuzou's flaws, he has greatly helped the Seireitei in many ways. His abilities at manipulation and understanding others has allowed him to create hundreds of military strategies, detective techniques, and even greatly added to the database of psychological knowledge and techniques. While Yuuzou himself has never written anything down for the benefit of others, he has taught many his ways in the Dohougakai, and through word of mouth those techniques have spread even further. And though loathed and hated by many, and disgusted by all the rest, Yuuzou's contributions to numerous high-risk missions cannot be undervalued. Time and time again he has been able to save hundreds of lives, if not thousands, while also finding solutions to problems that could have created catastrophic economical, military, or global cataclysms in Soul Society.

But Yuuzou's brightness and his talent at ending a terrible situation before it escalates beyond control is not something he himself values. The Leper does not enjoy helping or assisting others, nor does he enjoy the presence of other shinigami. The entire race could go and die for all he cares, and he'd gladly live with the ashes. When asked if he is a shinigami, he rarely gives a direct answer. When people attempt to talk with him, he goes silent and then breaks them down. Everything he does is geared towards repelling or harming others in some way, shape, or form. If he perverts or destroys them in the effort to escape their company then all the better. And while others often attempt to play a psychological game with him, they always fail. His lack of morals and his skill at reading others like open books makes him unpredictable and uncombatable in battles on the mental scape. This has made it so those that he does know often avoid him, and tells others to leave well enough alone unless they too want to get caught in the Dohougakai's jaws.

Firstly, I read "Dohougakai's Jaws" as Dohougakai's Jews" and got unusually excited.

I have to give you extreme credit for actually making me cringe when you described Yuuzou's eye. Seriously. You managed to find the right combination of words to make it gross. Haha. It's not easy to do that to me, so that's definitely worth mentioning.

This is a very interesting character. He is clearly flawed in a lot of ways, and borderline evil. But it's understandable how he got to be the way he is. It's good to see that you threw in a history that shows how his injuries came about, and how they made him into the twisted man he is now. I'm definitely interested in seeing what kind of powers and abilities he may have. I wonder if they can make up for the injuries.
